Abstract

Household organic waste remains a significant environmental issue, requiring attention because much of it is not optimally utilized and ends up in landfills. Kitchen waste, such as food scraps, vegetables, and fruit peels, has the potential to be processed into useful and economically valuable products. This community service activity aims to increase public understanding of organic waste management through the use of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggots as an alternative waste reduction and a home business opportunity. The activity was held on September 8, 2025, in Selat Village, Pemayung District, Batanghari Regency, Jambi Province, using outreach, presentation, discussion, and Q&A methods. The material provided included an introduction to organic waste, the impacts of improper waste management, an introduction to BSF maggots, and their potential use as alternative feed and an economically valuable commodity. The results of the activity showed that participants participated enthusiastically and actively during the discussion and Q&A sessions. Participants gained knowledge about sorting organic waste and utilizing kitchen waste as a medium for maggot cultivation. This activity provided insight to the community that household organic waste can be utilized as an economically valuable resource while supporting efforts to reduce waste generation at its source. Thus, education about the use of BSF maggots has the potential to be an approach to supporting more sustainable organic waste management at the household level.
